Investigative journalism aiming to disrupt power, capital and impunity.

UndercurrentS is an independent platform for investigative journalism — cross-border investigations, analysis and exposés into fraud, corruption, the state–corporate nexus, state surveillance, extractive exploitation, climate and environmental violations, and human rights.

Every story here is edited, fact-checked, and put to a right of reply before it runs. The proof sits inside each piece — the orders, filings and records behind the reporting, collected in one place you can open and check. The legitimacy is the story, not the logo above it.

It's built to be bigger than one person. The aim is a home for freelance and independent investigators — the kind of rigorous, document-backed reporting that global media increasingly won't take — where editors and fact-checkers work story by story and are paid for it, as are the contributors.

I'm Anand Mangnale, the founder. For the last two years I've worked as an independent investigative journalist, reporting across borders well beyond India, including Africa and South Asia. In that time, nearly twenty global publications turned down investigations I'd spent months on — "we don't take freelance or independent investigations," or "not for us." The stories were mine, and so was the risk — legal, surveillance, intimidation — whether a masthead was attached or not.

So I stopped waiting and started publishing here. That's why UndercurrentS exists: to put rigorous investigations on the record without asking permission, and to build something other independent investigators can use too. Too many stories die over legal risk; that's the line I'll stretch. If a story is in the public interest, if it matters for democracy, it goes.

Because journalism is a project of democracy.
